LOVE2 PLANT SALE 15 MAY 2021

As some of you will know on Saturday 15 May the Society's LOVE 2 team held the LOVE 2 Plant Sale. 

This raised A LARGER SUM than we have ever raised before. 

 

My thanks to the LOVE 2 team of Sally, Morag, Karen, Kate and Sylvia.

and not forgetting all our wonderful customers

DAFFODIL COMETITION - APRIL 2021

Our annual daffodil competition usually takes place as part of the April Monthly Meeting. Because of the Covid restrictions, that was just not possible.

Our programme Secretary Jenny was, however, not going to be thwarted, and decided that we should have the event in the car park of the venue where we usually meet.

The bulbs (Golden Trumpets) were distributed last December and Saturday 10 April was the date when we could view members growing efforts and the winners awarded. What a fine display it made, and what a good turn out of members and daffodils as can be seen in the images below.

Spring 2021

Its always cheering when spring comes along and the blossoms starts to flower and we also see wonderful splashes of colour from tulips and daffodils.

Soon, without doubt, we will have carpets of blue as the bluebells come into flower. 

What a pity the recent frosts have spoiled some of the magnolia trees just as they were at their best.

Despite the dull days, and gloominess of lock down, nature still takes its course and it cheers you up to see heather and the snowdrops starting to flower.

Surely, signs of the good things to come.

TERRY STENT RIP

Just before Christmas we were saddened to learn of the death in hospital of Terry Stent.

He was a very long term member of LODHS, and for many years was an enthusiastic exhibitor (and a prize winner) at our shows. There was always fierce competition between, amongst others, Terry, Roy, Rosemary and Len. All, now sadly, no longer with us.

Recently received through the letterbox was the latest catalogue from seed merchants D T Brown. This was a

timely reminder that Terry acted as the agent for our Members to obtain their seeds at competitive prices. Every autumn orders were collected, and then early the following year Terry would distribute them. A quite formidable task, but always cheerfully undertaken.

The funeral was a family affair and took place at St Johns, Hurst Green. A memorial service will be held when the present health emergency is over.

CHRISTMAS AND THEN 2021

With all the doom and gloom around, it is heartening for anyone who gardens to know that just round the corner new life will start coming, with the snow drops, crocus and daffodils. Then a little after that the trees will burst into life with all the spring blossom.  Makes you feel better just thinking about the prospect. 

Our local churches are ready for Christmas. We hope you are too, and that you make the best of it possible, in the unusual circumstances.

Daffodil Competition 2021

 

As we wind towards the end of 2020, that has proved to be a most unusual year, but so far as LODHS is concerned, a touch of normality has been possible.

One of the features of our AGM in December is to distribute daffodil bulbs to those members present, for them to grow, then bring and show the resulting efforts at the April Meeting. The entries are then judged by those at the meeting and a winner declared.

So as we could do something together, Jenny and Rick brought the bulbs ('Golden Trumpets'), supplied the pots and set up the operation in the Red Cross Car Park on Saturday 4 December. Members could then collect their daffodils and exchange seasonal greetings. All from a safe distance.

A few bulbs remain, so do contact Jenny if you wish to have a go at growing some ready for April.

Lest we forget - St Peters Limpsfield November 2020

Remembrance Sunday is the 8 November 2020, and It will be without the usual church services and other activities that usually mark the occasion.

However, there is no mistaking the season should you be passing St Peters Limpsfield,

They have mounted a very striking display.

Hurst Green Virtual Show 5 Sept 2020

Hurst Green Gardening Club is running a virtual Autumn Show. Below is an extract from the email we have received.You do not have to be a member to participate.

"We are therefore pleased to show the updated schedule for the show (below) – please, please, and for the third time please, have a go, and see what you can do.  If you are unsure of the format, do look at the Summer Show onwww.hggardeningclub.blogspot.com as this will give an idea of what we are expecting.  We do know that some members were a bit unsure of an online show last time before it was published, but hopefully the result will reassure you all and give some ideas to you as well!

You can start taking photographs from today, and we will then be taking entries from Monday 24 August to Saturday 5 September at 10pm, so you have plenty of time to photograph at your leisure." 

 

September 2020 Meeting

We have heard that the Red Cross Hall, Oxted, will not be open for us to hold our Monthly Meeting on Wednesday 2 September.

Alas, we shall not be able to hear Simon Sutcliffe's talk about " Growing for Chelsea".

We may be luckier with 7 October.

OUR VIRTUAL SUMMER SHOW July 2020

Below are the entries for our Photo Competition. We do thank all those who made submissions. Classes 1 to 6 are being judged by Sylvia Pocock, and the outcome will be announced as soon as possible.

Looking around

We have received a few images, but always welcome more to post here or go in or Monthly Newsletter.

Take your phone/camera with you when out and about and snap away, there is so much to see, especially as we now move from spring into summer.
