CHRISTMAS AND THEN 2021

With all the doom and gloom around, it is heartening for anyone who gardens to know that just round the corner new life will start coming, with the snow drops, crocus and daffodils. Then a little after that the trees will burst into life with all the spring blossom.  Makes you feel better just thinking about the prospect.

Our local churches are ready for Christmas. We hope you are too, and that you make the best of it possible, in the unusual circumstances.

The Chairmans Christmas Greetings

Daffodil Competition 2021

As we wind towards the end of 2020, that has proved to be a most unusual year, but so far as LODHS is concerned, a touch of normality has been possible.

Jenny with Val
One of the features of our AGM in December is to distribute daffodil bulbs to those members present, for them to grow, then bring and show the resulting efforts at the April Meeting. The entries are then judged by those at the meeting and a winner declared.

So as we could do something together, Jenny and Rick brought the bulbs ('Golden Trumpets'), supplied the pots and set up the operation in the Red Cross Car Park on Saturday 4 December. Members could then collect their daffodils and exchange seasonal greetings. All from a safe distance.

A few bulbs remain, so do contact Jenny if you wish to have a go at growing some ready for April.

They have mounted a very striking display.

We shall not forget..........

Hurst Green Virtual Show 5 Sept 2020

Hurst Green Gardening Club is running a virtual Autumn Show. Below is an extract from the email we have received. You do not have to be a member to participate.

"We are therefore pleased to show the updated schedule for the show (below) – please, please, and for the third time please, have a go, and see what you can do.  If you are unsure of the format, do look at the Summer Show onwww.hggardeningclub.blogspot.com as this will give an idea of what we are expecting.  We do know that some members were a bit unsure of an online show last time before it was published, but hopefully the result will reassure you all and give some ideas to you as well!

You can start taking photographs from today, and we will then be taking entries from Monday 24 August to Saturday 5 September at 10pm, so you have plenty of time to photograph at your leisure."

September 2020 Meeting

We have heard that the Red Cross Hall, Oxted, will not be open for us to hold our Monthly Meeting on Wednesday 2 September.

Alas, we shall not be able to hear Simon Sutcliffe's talk about " Growing for Chelsea".

We may be luckier with 7 October.

runner to the winner of Class1.

Looking around

We have received a few images, but always welcome more to post here or go in or Monthly Newsletter.
Take your phone/camera with you when out and about and snap away, there is so much to see, especially as we now move from spring into summer.

CM: Looking out to my back garden I can see the red of the photinia,
the white and mauve lilacs and the fabulous  Hawthorne blossom.
Glorious colour!

The rhododendrons burst forth, but seemed
to go over very quickly.

The figs are doing well this year
A full bodied poppy adding colour to the garden
The roses are looking good

If we had a show, would they still
be at their best to display?

Always welcome. The sight of our water

PLANT SALE TURNS TO "LOVE"

Our plans to hold a Plant Sale on Saturday 17 May could not take place because of the current restrictions.

However, an intrepid band of LODHS growers were deep into developing a scheme to encourage first time growers to make a start. All this took place on our Facebook pages under the banner "LOVE" ((Limpsfield and Oxted Veg Experiment).

All this activity culminated in boxes of assorted veg being ready for collection on Saturday 16 May. Each collection was timed and organised so that social distancing was maintained. Advice will continue to be given, so keep a watch on this link to Facebook.

Our thanks also go to all those who purchased boxes, and we trust they will have an enjoyable and successful venture growing their own vegetables.

Chairman Rick had this to say:

"The 2020 Plant sale turns to LOVE (Limpsfield and Oxted
Veg Experiment)  has been a resounding success, well done
to everybody involved.
My thanks especially to Sally, Kate, Morag and Karen
without their enthusiasm and commitment it would not have
happened.
My thanks also to everyone who grew plants for the sale.
I think this could be the start of a new direction for the
Society.
Thanks, again and well done to all."

The planting begins

SPRING IN THE GARDEN

The dazzle of the blossom continues despite the general gloom. Just shows how wonderful nature can be.
We do hope you are able to get outside for exercise to enjoy the show of blossom. It really does cheer you up.
Thanks to Rick for submitting.

Out and about

We have received a number of photos, and thought it worth while to publish so as ro cheer us all up. Hopefully, the beautiful weather over most of Easter inspired some of us to get out in the garden and really enjoy it.  It also seems perverse, that taking a walk for exercise can be such a pleasurable experience, given the delights of spring and the relative peace from traffic noise. The Magnolias seem to have had a tough time flowering just as we were experiencing a few frosts. Do you have a photo of one that got away with it?
Keep the photos coming and we will publish some more soon.
In the meantime keep healthy and well.
